Donors continue their support
ULEM is happy to report that recently the response has been heartwarming to say the least. Utah Dept. of Corrections Director Tom Patterson found a generous $10,000 dollars within the DOC budget to put toward the Memorial. Then the LDS Foundation provided a $50,000 grant, and the individual donations are numerous.
ULEM thanks these community leaders and community members for their support!

Deadline passes, all of Utah Fallen are sponsored
Great news from ULEM. All of Utah's Fallen have been sponsored fully by donations! This is a wonderful achievement, and we thank our donors.
This doesn't mean our need is no less, however, ULEM still has financial need to fund construction, labor and various parts of the Memorial. We are almost there!

Division of Wildlife Resources raises funds for forgotten Game Warden
After Utah Game Warden Ernest G. Berry was murdered in 1914, he was buried
in Mt. Olivet Cemetery . His family
couldn't afford a headstone so his grave was never marked. Over the years Warden Berry's gravesite was forgotton and is now covered by shrubbery. Thanks to Robert Kirby and his tireless efforts to make sure all Utah's Fallen are remembered, the Division of Wildlife Resources
has managed to raise the sponsorship money for their plaques,
and it looks like they'll also be able to afford a headstone for Utah's
first game warden to fall in the line of duty.

SPECIAL REPORT: History of the Ride for the Fallen
It all started with a challenge; the mother of all relay races, known as Hood to Coast. From the top of Mt. Hood to the beach at Seaside, more than 12,000 runners and walkers test their physical endurance and mental spirit through 197 grueling miles. In 2007, a group of law enforcement officers and their family members decided to take up the challenge and run in the memory of The Fallen.
Hoping to generate awareness, spur donations, and keep the memory of our fallen heroes alive inside each one of us, the group named themselves Shurtleff's Cybercops and entered the race. 28 hours later, they completed their goal and donated their funds to the new memorial.
It didn't end there. The CyberCops continued to visit local businesses and spread the word about Utah's peace officers' sacrifice. A 5k run was sponsored and all those proceeds benefitted ULEM.
Perhaps the most gratifying goal the CyberCops achieved was the initiation of the Ride 4 The Fallen. Open to all, the Fall Ride allows friends, family and supporters to dress up in their finest leathers, saddle up and ride in beatiful fall weather to remember our fallen officers. The first Ride was an overwhelming success and not only provided much needed support, but dollars for ULEM.
What was first conceived as a one time event is now an annual occasion and will undoubtedly become a popular ride for any motorcycle enthusiast.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT- Naples Police Department
Not many folks outside the Uintah Basin know the town of Naples, and the denizens of those parts will readily tell you that should you blink more than once, you might miss it altogether. But what Naples might lack in square miles, they do not lack in heart. ULEM Board Member Jackie Guibord made a trip to talk with the small Naples Police Department about the new Memorial on Mar. 13th and found the 8 officers completing Taser training. Despite it being the end of their day, the officers stayed to listen to Jackie as she told them about the ULEM project and the fund-raising efforts and made comments that they as a department had been very lucky to claim no names on the Memorial. The discussion that followed is only known to the Naples officers, but ULEM understands it was brief.
The result was that this tiny but dedicated group of law enforcement officers presented ULEM with a check for $1000.00. What a wonderful endorsement of their support for The Fallen, and ULEM thanks them.

Larry H. Miller steps up in a BIG way!
Anyone who has spent any time in Utah, and particularly the Salt Lake Valley knows the name Larry H. Miller. Mr. Miller is best known for his ownership of the Utah Jazz and car dealerships. What is less known to the community at large, and the law enforcement community in particular is that Mr. Miller holds in his heart a special place for police officers. Mr. Miller has shown this love time and time again in the past with simple acts such as buying local officers' dinner, to bringing SLCC and POST together at the aptly named Miller Campus.
Now Mr. Miller again shows his dedication to the community and to the states' police officers by a generous $50,000 donation to the Memorial.
ULEM thanks Larry H. Miller for his continuing support of Utah's law enforcement officers!

Help Wanted! Lost Relatives of the Fallen
ULEM is helping locate relatives of fallen officers from Utah in order to invite those relatives to be a part of the dedication of the fallen officer memorial in September, 2008.
We will take all the help we can get. A number of agencies do not have current information on relatives of fallen officers. The ULEM information is dated and needs current information in order to allow relatives an opportunity to help in the dedication of the Memorial.
