Homicide: Shooting
Officer Eric Estrada and Sergeant Lee D. Sorensen were tragically killed in the line of duty after responding to a domestic violence call in Garland.
The incident began when a woman called 911, reporting that she had been violently assaulted by her husband. Upon arrival, the first responding officer made contact with the woman, who denied that any physical violence had occurred.
As the officer was preparing to leave, the suspect retrieved a rifle and opened fire on the officer’s patrol vehicle, missing. The officer stopped his vehicle, called for backup, and attempted to assist the victim – who was now fleeing down the street, yelling that the suspect had a gun. The suspect then fatally shot the officer.
Shortly after, a second officer arrived at the scene. Upon seeing his fellow officer down in the roadway, he rushed to provide aid. The suspect opened fire again, killing the second officer.
Box Elder County Deputy Mike Allred and his K9 partner, Azula, arrived next. The suspect fired at them as well, injuring both Allred and Azula.
The suspect also fired a shot at a passing vehicle, nearly striking the driver. He reportedly believed the vehicle was an unmarked police unit. Armed with both a rifle and a revolver, the suspect then approached the fallen officers and continued searching for additional targets.
Eventually, the suspect was subdued and taken into custody.
Officer Eric Estrada served with the Tremonton-Garland Police Department for less than a year and had eight (8) years of law enforcement experience. He is survived by his wife, daughter, and son.
